All agricultural and household trash, like used broomsticks, rugs, and old clothes, is thrown into a bonfire and burnt in a ritual called Bhogi Mantalu. Lamps are lit above the Kolam made of rice flour paste and red markings with the base made of 'Gobbemma' (Fresh cow dung cakes). They welcome the new era with an immaculate house and adorn it with marigold flowers and mango leaves. The Bhogi festival marks the beginning of a new era in Andra Pradesh. Makar Sankranti is the transit of the Sun from the Dhanu Rashi to the Makar Rashi, marking the Sun's passage from the Southern to the Northern Hemisphere. Although this festival has its origin in Andra Pradesh, people in Tamil Nadu celebrate Bhogi as the first day of Pongal, the harvest festival in Tamil Nadu that corresponds to Makar Sankranti. Lord Indra is adorned for good health and harvest, giving day the name Indran. The celebrations of this festival will begin with the sunrise at 7:14 AM on 14th January, according to the Hindu Calendar. The harvest festival, Bhogi, celebrated in Andra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and some parts of Karnataka, falls on the 14th of January, 2024.
